Kids these days are lucky to have access to a  variety of toys and learning materials. 

But if we are talking about the best toys for youngsters, robots are definitely at the top of our list. Not only is the robot  fun to play with, it provides children with additional knowledge and helps them develop an interest in science, robotics, technology and other topics. Spero 2.0 

At first glance, Sphero 2.0 seems simple enough. 

But this "ball" is not at all simple. 

This is a robot  connected to a smartphone app for  remote control entertainment. The ball changes color and can travel at a speed of 5 miles per hour.

I first reviewed  Sphero here a few years ago. Overall I was impressed, but realized the need  to develop an "ecosystem". Now I think the whole market, especially the Sphero has greatly improved the game. You will need to download the Sphero app on your iOS or Android device to control the ball. The app has a Dpad that you can use to control the ball. The core of the Sphero is very similar to a remote-controlled car.

The application starts at a slow pace and you can  spend more and more time driving the ball to level up. The higher the level, the faster the top speed. Each level you unlock is accompanied by a series of improvements. This update will help you get the most out of your Sphero Ball, such as unlocking the Rainbow Drive feature, which tells the ball to change color as you drive it.

Controlling the ball  is fun, but this isn't the only thing  you can do with the Sphero. You can download another mobile application that works with the ball. Over 24 other applications available. 

For example, you can  use your smartphone like a golf club while playing mini golf with a sphero ball. Just turn your smartphone into a contact. There are also augmented reality applications that take advantage of your immediate environment. Think Pokemon Go, but more interactive. 

For example, in the Rolling Dead mobile app you should be able to control a Sphero to flip zombies coming up from the living room floor, whereas apps like Sphero Macrolab allow you to run preset macros in the order you choose. 

In the meantime, orbBasic teaches you how to program in BASIC to create Sphero's behavior. Why you should buy it. What makes Sphero 2.0 a great buy is the endless possibilities it offers. You can race with your friends,  drive on land and on water, and do other things besides driving with the mobile app. There is also a version of SPRK, which means school, parents, robots and children. 

This is  for school and some of the  activities offered include learning to draw fingers with Sphero for little ones and coding for  older kids.

4M Tin Can Robot

If you want to get your kids interested in robotics while  teaching them how to recycle, you can buy a 4M tin can robot.

WowWee MiP Robot

WowWee MiP robots are probably what you mean when you think of robotic toys. The MiP Robot retails for a good price, but you can usually find it cheaper on Amazon.

The robot moves on a pair of rubber wheels and aims to become friends through interactive games and audio recordings. He dances for you and even moans or screams to express himself. The WowWee MiP looks like a humanoid with a thin robot shape and a spherical head like an R2D2.

The is 9 inches tall and is available in two colors, black and white.  It has a microphone, an infrared sensor on the forehead, an infrared transmitter, and LED eye lights. There is also a speaker on the back of the, The can be displayed on the included stand when not in use. Requires 4 AAA batteries to power on. When on,  lights up and starts moving according to your hand gestures. 

You can turn him by swiping his hand left or right.  You can also request scrolling forwards or backwards with hand gestures or control it with a mobile app that you can install on your smartphone. In addition to this, there are 6 other modes you can use to interact with the robot: Cage, Stack, Dance, Track, Roam and Trick. To change the mode, just turn one of the MiP robot wheels and the LED  light will turn on in that mode.

The Trick lets you have the robot learn a set of 50 commands, and the Wander lets you set the robot to move around the room and avoid obstacles on its own. "Dance" makes the robot rotate and "Track" instructs the robot to follow the hand without making any obvious gestures. The other two modes, Stack and Cage, are playable mini-games. The mobile application opens additional functions beyond simple robot control. 

These additional features include more dance moves and the ability to use  MiP emotional vessels, which will change the way and "feel" of the robot's movement. Romibo

Who said robots should look futuristic and mechanical? Not Rombo! Romibo is fluffy like a moving and talking stuffed toy. Romibo is actually being used as a treatment robot for children with autism.

The Romibo weighs less than 7 pounds and moves on two wheels. Even small children can easily lift it. There is a small screen on the front of the that shows two eyes that can follow the user. These eyes can make eye contact with you, but occasionally blink to indicate that they are not suitable for a gaze contest. The Romibo is speaking and  can be controlled by a mobile app that  can be downloaded to your iPad.

The mobile application is also used to construct phrases and words that the robot will "speak" to. Having a rombo beside a child with autism is helpful because it can help improve their language skills and  can teach the child how to behave in social situations.
