The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Delhi, India, will launch a new graduate program next year with a focus on artificial intelligence and data science, PTI News reported Tuesday. A senior institution official told the news agency that IIT Delhi's Artificial Intelligence School (ScAI) is planning to launch a graduate program dedicated to artificial intelligence.
The IIT Delhi Senate, the faculty responsible for all major educational decisions, has approved a proposed program called M Tech in Machine Intelligence and Data Science (MINDS), officials said. According to the report, MTech in MINDS will become the school's flagship program and is expected to begin in July 2022. This is the second degree offered by the department. Previously, the school had a PhD in Artificial Intelligence. An official said,
"The doctoral program received a lot of attention in the first year of opening." “Last semester, 90 successful PhD students enrolled in ScAI, which is unusual for a young academic community like us as students tend to prefer more established academic programs. But they chose us on the assumption that we had a really strong faculty in the field of artificial intelligence,” he said at PTI. The graduate program is planned as a sectoral program. Students are expected to work on industry-specific AI issues as they will be jointly consulted by professors from IIT Delhi and researchers from sponsoring companies.
Any student with a Bachelor of Science or Engineering degree is eligible to participate in the MINDS program. “Educational institutions today cannot be isolated. They must work closely with all stakeholders, including industry, non-profit organizations and government agencies. V. Ramgopal Rao, Director of IIT Delhi said, "The M.Tech program will strengthen collaboration between academia and industry in the field of artificial intelligence."
The curriculum includes graduate courses in core AI technologies such as deep learning and data mining, applied courses such as computer vision, natural language processing, and artificial intelligence for healthcare, and basic mathematics courses that underlie modern artificial intelligence technologies.
